As an Alaska Wedding Planner, I love the opportunity to create unique experiences that reflect the personalities of the couples I work with. Bekah and Alex, a vibrant and FUN couple from Arizona, approached me with a vision that was very unique. They wanted to bring two very different vibes together to their backyard wedding venue and needed a wedding planner that was up for breaking the molds of wedding tradition. Their wedding was an exciting journey, filled with creativity, music, and a LOT of magic. Let me take you through their incredible day!
Bekah and Alex are not your average couple. With a shared passion for EDM and dubstep music festivals, they wanted their wedding to capture that festive spirit while also showcasing their unique personalities. They sought a laid-back, go-with-the-flow Alaska wedding planner who could turn their backyard wedding dreams into reality. When I first met with Bekah and Alex, they shared their exciting engagement story from one of their favorite festivals. Incorporating this piece of their love story into their wedding day was a top priority.
Their vision was strikingly eclectic: the men would wear traditional Viking garb, complete with capes and bold accessories, while the women would don ethereal, fairyland-inspired dresses. This beautiful blend of themes made planning their wedding an exciting challenge. I couldn’t wait to bring their imaginative ideas to life! Planning your dream wedding is exciting, and choosing the right team to make it happen is so important!
Choosing Bekah’s childhood home as their venue added an intimate layer to their celebration. The backyard was spacious, surrounded by towering trees and nestled in the Chugach Mountains—an ideal backdrop for their special day. However, backyard weddings come with their own set of logistics that need careful planning. Hiring an experienced wedding planner will help you navigate these complex logistics of hosting your wedding at your childhood home or other backyard venue.
We had to consider a number of different factors for this wedding: delivery logistics, power sources for entertainment, guest parking, restroom access and inclement weather. Renting an event tent was a non-negotiable for this event. We brought in portable restrooms from a local rental company. Because the location of this home is on a narrow dirt road with minimal parking, we had a designated guest parking location with a shuttle service. Despite these challenges, the familiar and cherished surroundings of Bekah’s home created a warm atmosphere that resonated deeply with their family and friends.
On the day of the wedding, the atmosphere was electric. Intimate yet bursting with joy, Bekah and Alex’s celebration was filled with love and laughter. The couple’s personal touches made the day incredibly special. We had Mead imported from Drinking Horn Meadery in Arizona, which is a local favorite! In lieu of cake, Bekah and Alex chose single-serve ice ream from Wild Scoops. Since traditional wedding catering wasn’t their style, we choose a pizza bar from the famous Moose’s Tooth Pizza. This was a destination wedding for most of their guests, so incorporating unique Alaskan experiences was a must-have.
As the ceremony unfolded, you could feel the love enveloping the backyard. Bekah walked down the stairs alone, and was greeted by both her mother and father who walked her down the aisle. Friends and family shared in the joyous moments as Bekah and Alex completed a traditional hand-fasting ceremony atop a viking-inspired boat. The air was alive with laughter, and the smiles on everyone’s faces spoke volumes about the love surrounding this couple. The ceremony concluded with a traditional 3-shot gun salute from the groomsmen.
Planning your dream wedding means choosing your dream vendors. The reception kicked off with a decadent cocktail hour charcuterie graze from Alaska Berry and Board. However, true to the overall theme of the celebration, this wasn’t just any grazing table. This was a full boat full of decadent meats, cheeses, nuts, fruit, chocolate strawberries and two sails of pastrami. Dinner and traditional wedding formalities kicked off the evening portion of the reception. Bekah presented her mother with an honorary wedding bouquet, similarly styled to hers and opened the dance floor for her parents to share a “first dance” as they were eloped in a small ceremony 46 years earlier.
This wasn’t just any wedding when it came to the late-night dancing. True to Bekah and Alex’s personalities, they changed into more appropriate, festival-style attire to kick off the dancing. They had an epic grand entrance to one of their favorite bangers! The energy was unmatched.
This magical day wouldn’t have been possible without the dedicated team of vendors who worked tirelessly behind the scenes. From the florist to the DJ, every vendor played a vital role in bringing Bekah and Alex’s vision to life. They poured their hearts into every detail, ensuring that the couple’s dreams were made reality.

They brought me some very unique ideas – which I was so excited to run with – and I could not be more pleased with how they turned out. Creating a wedding design that encompasses both a viking feel and an ethereal, fairyland vibe was a challenge that really pushed me as a planner/designer.
